About Us

We Turn the Northern Lights Into Knowledge, Tools, and Simple Science

NorthernLightsIceland.com is built around one mission:
to help people understand, capture, and forecast the Northern Lights better than ever before.

We focus on three things:

1. Improving Aurora Forecasting with AI

We are developing an AI model designed to understand aurora conditions with greater accuracy.
To do this we combine:

  • space weather data

  • weather and cloud metrics

  • magnetic field measurements

  • real-world images from users

As our camera app grows, users will be able to capture even very weak auroras with normal smartphones. These images help fuel and fine-tune our forecasting model, creating a unique feedback loop:

Better photos → Better data → Smarter forecasts.

Our goal is to make aurora forecasting clearer, more accurate, and more user-friendly.

2. Creating New Knowledge by Combining Multiple Data Sources

Most Northern Lights websites repeat the same information.
We do something different.

We take multiple API sources — space weather, solar wind, aurora oval models, cloud layers, satellite feeds — and combine them to create new insights that you can’t get anywhere else.

We call this New Knowledge.

Examples include:

  • real-time color expectations

  • clarity confidence scores

  • visibility zones

  • “Tonight explained simply” reports

We are not just sharing data —
we’re creating something new and easier to understand.

3. Simplifying Complex Science Papers for Everyone

Space weather research can be extremely technical.
We read those papers, break them down, and explain them in everyday language.

This includes topics like:

  • solar storms

  • brown dwarf auroras

  • exoplanet atmospheres

  • magnetic field behavior

  • space weather interactions with Earth

Our goal is not to act as scientists —
our goal is to make science accessible.
If a paper is too complex, we turn it into a simple, visual explanation.

Why We Exist

The Northern Lights excite people worldwide, but truly understanding them can be difficult:

  • Forecasting is confusing

  • Data charts are intimidating

  • Scientific discoveries are hard to follow

  • Most explanations online are too shallow or too technical

We bridge the gap between raw science, AI, and real human understanding.

Who We Are

We are a small Iceland-based team passionate about:

  • aurora science

  • AI forecasting

  • photography

  • meaningful, clear education

We collaborate with travelers, photographers, data engineers, and astronomy enthusiasts to build tools and content that help everyone — from beginners to experienced skywatchers.

Our Promise

We will always aim to be:

✔ Accurate

Based on real data and published scientific research.

✔ Clear

Simple explanations anyone can understand.

✔ Useful

Tools and knowledge that help you decide where and when to look.

✔ Transparent

We explain our methods and link to the scientific papers behind our articles.

Looking Ahead

As our AI model evolves and our camera app launches, we will continue improving everything we create:

  • better nightly forecasting

  • better visual tools

  • better explanations

  • better data

  • better user experience

We believe that the Northern Lights should be understandable, predictable, and beautifully captured — and we’re building the tools to make that possible.
